What I've learned so far

I’ve had numerous experiences in my UROP of my experiences failing on me and most of my IAP and past summer was an accumulation of bad results. But, for some reason I came into this module thinking that everything would work- probably because it is a class, and thought class experiments should always go according to plan. So, I was excited to see our ligands bind to FKBP12.
After Module 1, I realized that this is not true. We did not obtain any results that were statistically significant.

Although disappointed with the results of my ligands, I think this is a good lesson to learn- that science isn’t perfect and frequently does not give you the results that you want. I think this stresses the point of repeating experiments and changing conditions to optimize procedures to obtain the best results. If given the chance, I would repeat this experiment and hope for statistically significant results.

Throughout this module, I also learned a lot about scientific writing. I feel more confident in my ability to write abstracts, methods sections, results sections, and make figures.

I can now scan and search for articles effectively using abstracts. I found that writing the background and future implications sections required a lot of literature to support claims, and I enjoyed searching for the information- I feel better about reading and understanding scientific literature because of it.

The data summary was a good introductory assignment to writing scientific reports. I thought the hardest part was writing the results section because you need to explain the figure. While the most tedious part was making figures and captions that conveyed the results of the experiments the best way possible.

I have learned so much in this half semester already, and know I chose the right major because I love Course 20 and this class.
